In India, large clay pots called मटका (matka) are common. The porous clay gradually absorbs the water, which is then evaporated from the outer surface. The evaporation cools the clay, as well as anything stored in the pot. Through this, these pots act as somewhat primitive refrigerators. Similar cooling pots have been used around the world, and date back to around 3000 BC.
