The name Meera (or Mira) has different origins around the world. In India, it is usually in reference to a 16th century mystic who bore the name. The stories say that she was ultra-devoted to the deity Krishna, putting him ahead of her own husband. When she died her body was said to have vanished - taken perhaps by Krishna himself. Unfortunately everything known of Meera was written long after she lived (the earliest texts dating to around 150 years after her death). The inconsistencies between accounts also suggest her story was manipulated and rewritten, possibly for political reasons. Regardless, Meera's story - be it truth or fiction - is still alive in Indian vernacular: saying someone is 'something's Meera' implies they are obsessed with that something.
