The Sarcophagus of the Spouses was carved in Cerveteri, Italy in the 6th century BC, and presumably held the remains of a couple. It was found two and half millennia later in its tomb, largely in disarray from previous grave pillaging. It's incredible artistic worth was recognised, and it was moved to the Louvre and restored. For its time, the craftsmanship is superb, and betrays Greek influence typical in the Etruscan Civilisation. More than this, however, the loving smiles and eyes of the couples - whose identities will most likely never be known - are captivating.
