A standard marathon is 42.195 km, which seems like a somewhat arbitrary distance. It is based on the distance between the cities of Athens and Marathon (from which the event derives its name) in Greece. After the Battle of Marathon, it is said that the soldier Pheidippides ran to Athens to deliver the news of their victory. Whether this actually happened is up for debate, as is the actual distance Pheidippides supposedly ran. In between the two cities is a mountain, and although running around it is roughly 42 km, running over it can shorten it to 35 km. In any case, the distance was standardised as 42.195 km in 1921, and remains such today. The fastest marathon was claimed by Dennis Kipruto Kimmeno in 2014, at an impressive 2:02:57. This equates to an average speed of roughly 21 km/h.
