Part of growing up in Canada is hearing the song about the Blackflies of Northern Ontario. The song was composed by Wade Hemsworth who, after the Second World War, worked in Norther Ontario as a surveyor. He later moved to Montreal, where he wrote folk songs about his experiences and played them at folk venues. Hemsworth sometimes played alongside sisters Kate and Anna McGarrigle, of the Mountain City Four, and the group helped popularise some of Hemsworth's songs. The sisters continued to perform as a duo until Kate's death in 2010. Kate and Anna - born to musical parents themselves - each had two children, and all four have grown up to be musicians themselves. As for Hemsworth, he passed away in 2002, but not before recording a complete collection of his songs in 1996. Although he produced under 20 songs in his lifetime, they have come to be recognised as a definitive landmark in Canadian folk.
