लौकी (Lauki) is a vegetable popular in India, known in English as Calabash or Bottle Gourd. It seems to have originated in southern Africa, and was one of the first cultivated plants in the world. The plant has been proven to have arrived in the New World before Christopher Columbus, which has puzzled archaeologists. Currently the hypothesis is that they were either brought across the Bering Strait as humans migrated, or floated across the ocean.
