India Gate is a large war memorial located in New Delhi. It was completed in 1931, and takes a large part of its inspiration from Paris' Arc de Triomphe, built a century earlier. But the latter was not the first such archway. Triumphal arches date back to Roman times, and are an enduring trope around the world. As well as Delhi and Paris, they can be found in London, Bucharest, Halifax, Pyongyang, and the list goes on. Delhi's arch was built by Edwin Lutyens, who oversaw many construction projects around the capital under British rule. The area of Delhi in which his projects are found became known as Lutyens' Delhi, which includes the heart of the city: Connaught Place.
