Research has shown that different languages have different 'main colours'. English has about 11 colours, but some languages have as few as 3. Interestingly, most languages follow a 'hierarchy of colours', in which certain colours are much more likely to be included than others. After black and white, the next colour to be named is usually red, while blue only shows up in countries with many colour names.
