Pope Julius II, in 1505, nearing the end of his life, commissioned a tomb from Michelangelo. This project was initially envisioned to be a grandiose multi-level structure, with as many as 40 statues, and Michelangelo began excitedly working on what he foresaw being a masterpiece. However, over the next forty years (continuing well after the pope's death in 1513) the project would be repeatedly scaled down, apparently for budgetary reasons, and much to Michelangelo's disappointment. Completed in 1545, not all of the sculptures intended for the tomb made the final version. These unused sculptures include the Dying and Rebellious Slaves, both now located in the Louvre.
